Birdie has been a graphic artist in Provincetown for 25 years. She creates images of Provincetown and Cape Cod using colors reflecting ocean, sand and sky. Soft hughes of grays, blues and misty greens signature her work. Birdie's designs are recognized for the uncluttered subtly and limited use of color. The resulting effect is what is most meaningful to those who visit the Cape. Long winding beaches, boats in the harbor, sunsets and sand dunes all to capture a memory of this magical tip of Cape Cod.
I recently developed an interest in working with encaustic painting. I fell in love immediately. The fluidity and luminosity of working with encaustics , manipulating the hot wax with heat, layering and scraping back is a radical departure from the controlled graphic approach. I am often surprised by how my initial intention becomes expressed in a way I did not expect. I like painting simple images, striving to create a whimsical, colorful canvas. Fish, fruit , flowers and boats have been my focus this past year.
Birdie studied art and photography at Montserrat College of Art prior to receiving her BA from Harvard University and her MA fro Antioch University in Psychology. She spent several years as a psychotherapist before opening her screen print studio in Provincetown in 1990.
