Claire Kowalewski is a high-distinction Caldwell Scholar at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). As the birthplace of American art and the country’s first fine arts school and museum, PAFA trains many great artists and is home to one of the most important collections of American art anywhere.
Kowalewski’s current work stems from her fascination with Asian culture having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Shibuya in 30 Minutes is a series of 16x20 inch oil paintings on paper focusing on Tokyo’s metropolitan Shibuya district. Each painting was completed in one half hour inspired by found photographs. These works play with traditional and city lifestyles that capture the viewers eye with vivid color and unfamiliar locale.
Kowalewski is the 2010 winner, Congressional Art Competition, California, 8th District
